13 day Tanzanian birdwatching trip

Join us on this classic East African adventure, traversing Tanzania’s northern regions and birdwatching in some of the most famous and iconic wildlife areas in Africa in search of some of East Africa’s iconic bird species as well as incredible wildlife sightings, including the wildebeest migration through the Serengeti.

The tour departs from Arusha with the first destination being Tarangire National Park. Celebrated for its rolling savannahs interspersed with ancient baobab trees, the park covers approximately 2 850 square kilometres and is bisected by the Tarangire River, a vital water source during the dry season that draws vast gatherings of wildlife. With in excess of 500 bird species, Tarangire is a great introduction to birdwatching in East Africa and to our Tanzanian adventure.

From Tarangire, we travel north-east to the world famous Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most spectacular natural landmarks. Formed by the collapse of a massive volcano three million years ago, the crater forms a vast caldera over 260 square kilometres in size and more than 600 meters deep. Its lush, mineral-rich floor provides a year-round sanctuary for an extraordinary density of wildlife including in excess of 400 bird species.

We spend two days birding the rim of the crater, as well as the crater itself, before travelling on to the short grass plains of Ndutu in the southern Serengeti to witness one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles: the wildebeest calving season. During this period, over 8 000 calves are born daily, attracting a plethora of predators and providing thrilling wildlife encounters. The fertile plains offer abundant grazing and relative safety for mothers and newborns, while the presence of cheetahs, lions, and hyenas adds a pulse of excitement. For wildlife enthusiasts witnessing the sheer scale and intensity of the calving season at Ndutu is an unforgettable highlight of any Tanzanian safari adventure.

From Ndutu we travel northwards to the Central Serengeti, a premier destination for birdwatchers with its diverse habitats that support an astonishing variety of birdlife. This region comprises of a range of different habitats including endless grasslands, Vachellia woodlands and riparian forests which provide shelter for in excess of 500 resident and migratory bird species. After spending three days birdwatching in the central Serengeti we return to Arusha where the tour ends.
